“You Only Live Once – so why not try to be the best person you can be, both inside and out. If I can achieve my dreams and ambitions, you can too.”
MATTY SAMAEI MASTER COSMETIC INJECTOR AND NURSE
One of my earliest childhood memories is my father telling me that “an educated woman, who has a career, is a free woman”. I have never forgotten those wise words and strived to live in my life and my career as an educated and free woman.
By the time I was 4 years and still in Tehran the place of my birth, I was already playing with my mum’s make up, mixing her creams and lotions together, when I was discovered I simply told mum that I was ‘making a new cream for you”, so I guess that is where my passion for beauty and the beauty business started.
I have been blessed with a wonderful family who despite having endured some serious hardships have been a rock and guiding light for me in my life and career. The revolution in Iran split our family apart with my father, brother and sister heading overseas leaving mum and me behind in worn-torn Iran (not an easy time for us). It took nearly a decade but we were united as a family again in Austria and finally landing in Australia at the age of 13. I guess you could say I learned to ‘tough it out’ at a pretty young age!
Despite how happy we all were, I was, to be in the lucky country – my challenges didn’t just go away, they kind of started all over again. Without English, school was very difficult so I had to be strong and resilient and managed to make up for my lack of language by learning to socialise with just about every one of my class mates. People liked me, I liked people and slowly but surely school, education and friends came together for me. Again, I persisted and gained more and more confidence as a person, so much so that I was able to attend Sydney University to do a Bechelor of Nursing after having met a Cosmetic Nurse who inspired me toward that career. And as they say, “when you love what you do, you won’t work a day in your life”.
As any mother reading this would know, the instant your first baby is placed into your arms – everything changes. My entire life’s perception changed, my priorities, my challenges, but having grown up how I grew up I knew that I could do whatever I wanted to do, which after Sahara was born included being a great mum and successful business woman. The birth of my second daughter Paris, took that self-awareness to an even greater level. Maybe that confidence and surety is why Channel 7 approached me to be their resident Beauty Expert, whatever the reason you can bet I was pretty excited and honoured to take up that opportunity and, I have never looked back.
So, where am I at today? My two favourite things in life are being a mother and doing the work that I do which I know is helping women all across Australia look better, feel better and have more confidence – what a privileged way to live. Recently I was asked to share what advice I would give my younger self, here’s what I would tell me:
Believe and trust in yourself. Only you know what you are capable of. There are opportunities everywhere, you just need to keep your eyes open and grab them while they are still there. Do not worry so much what anyone else thinks. Work hard, chase your dreams and do what you love, because if you love what you do, you will succeed. In life you will face many mountains and there will be lots of hurdles but that is a normal part of life. Just follow your heart and you will be happy.
